Why Silk Rugs Need Specialist Cleaning
Silk is one of the most delicate natural fibres used in rug-making. The individual filaments are extremely fine, and the dyes used — especially in antique and Persian silk rugs — are sensitive to both heat and moisture. A method that works perfectly on wool or synthetic rugs can cause permanent damage to silk.
Nick's Professional Carpet Cleaning uses low-moisture encapsulation cleaning for all silk rugs. This method cleans thoroughly without saturating the fibres, preventing the colour bleed and water marking that hot-water extraction can cause on silk.
Silk Rugs We Specialise In
- Persian silk rugs — hand-knotted with natural dyes; require the most delicate approach
- Chinese silk rugs — fine pile with high lustre; cleaned with pH-neutral, silk-safe products
- Indian silk rugs — often blended with cotton warp; assessed individually before cleaning
- Art silk (viscose) rugs — synthetic silk that mimics the look but needs its own gentle treatment
- Silk-wool blend rugs — mixed fibre rugs requiring a balanced cleaning approach
- Antique & heirloom silk rugs — fragile rugs of significant value cleaned with extreme care
What's Included in Every Silk Rug Clean
- Pre-inspection to identify fibre type, dye sensitivity and condition
- Fibre and pH testing before any product is applied
- Gentle pre-treatment of stains using silk-safe spotting agents
- Low-moisture encapsulation clean across the full rug surface
- Careful pile grooming to restore the natural directional sheen
- Final inspection under good lighting to confirm result before we leave
Can You Remove Stains from Silk Rugs?
Many stains can be removed or greatly reduced from silk rugs — including red wine, coffee, food and general soiling. Pet urine stains are more complex because the acid in urine can affect natural dyes, but early treatment significantly improves outcomes.
We never use bleach or oxidising agents on silk. We use targeted, pH-balanced spotting agents designed specifically for natural protein fibres. We always test in a hidden area first and advise you honestly on the expected result before we begin.
How Often Should Silk Rugs Be Cleaned?
In low-traffic areas, once every 18 to 24 months is typically sufficient. In higher-traffic areas, or where the rug is exposed to pets or children, annual cleaning is advisable. Regular vacuuming with a suction-only vacuum (no beater bar) between professional cleans helps extend the time between treatments.
